New Holland ENG 3140 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Fuel Metering Unit: Metering Unit Signal Range Check - Signal Too Low
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the sensing voltage for the fuel metering unit is less than 0.0 V, indicating the circuit is shorted to a low source (ground).
Applies to these machines
14 machines- T5.95
- T5.105
- T5.115
- T6
- T7
- T8
- T9
- CR9090
- CX8080
- CX8090
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- W170B
- W190B
Check the cause
Connect an Electronic Service Tool to verify that the fault code is currently active
Inspect the wiring harness between the ECU and the fuel metering unit on the high-pressure pump for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or areas shorting to the engine block/ground
Disconnect the metering unit and the ECU to inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage
Use a multimeter to test the fuel high-pressure pump control circuit for a short to ground
Measure the internal resistance of the fuel metering unit solenoid to determine if the unit itself has failed and shorted internally
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic tests reveal a short to ground in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the affected harness section.
Replace Metering Unit
If the wiring tests good but the metering unit is internally shorted: Clean the area around the high-pressure fuel pump to prevent debris from entering the fuel system. Unplug the electrical connector from the fuel metering unit. Remove the mounting screws securing the metering unit to the high-pressure pump. Remove the faulty unit. Lubricate the O-rings on the new metering unit with clean diesel fuel. Carefully insert the new unit into the pump and torque the fasteners to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector to the metering unit and reconnect the battery.
Clear and Verify
Use the Electronic Service Tool to clear the ENG 3140 fault code. Start the engine and monitor the common rail fuel pressure to ensure the system is operating within parameters and the code does not return.
