ENG 3141

New Holland ENG 3141 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM / EDC): Fuel Metering Unit: Leakage is detected based on fuel quantity balance.

Issue description

The fuel flow setpoint is too low, or the high-pressure fuel pump is pumping more fuel than expected by the system. The system detects a discrepancy between the commanded fuel quantity and the actual fuel pressure/volume, interpreting it as a leak or an imbalance in the fuel metering circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Metering Unit Circuit: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the fuel metering unit (M-Prop) for shorts, opens, or loose contacts.

  2. Inspect Low-Pressure Fuel Lines: Check the fuel return tubes (from the pump back to the tank) to ensure they are not clogged or restricted.

  3. Check the Fuel Pressure Sensor: Verify the sensor is reading accurately and not sending erratic data to the ECU.

  4. Check for Leaking Injectors: Perform an injector return flow test to see if injectors are leaking excessive fuel back into the return system.

  5. Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve: Check the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail (often located under the valve cover on larger engines) to ensure it is not stuck open or leaking.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Pump

On larger tractors, the high-pressure pump is located at the rear right-hand side of the engine. Remove the breather cover on the back and take the breather off the filter to gain access.

  2. Remove the Gear

Use a specialized puller to remove the gear from the high-pressure fuel pump. Note: These specific diesel pumps do not have timing marks, so pump timing is not a factor during reinstallation.

  3. Replace the Component

Depending on the diagnosis, replace either the standalone Fuel Metering Unit (Quantity Control Valve) on the pump, or the entire High-Pressure Fuel Pump assembly if internal pump wear is found.

  4. Clear Lines and Reassemble

Ensure all fuel lines are clear of debris. Reinstall the pump gear, breather, and covers.

  5. Prime and Clear Codes

Prime the fuel system, clear the ENG 3141 fault code via the diagnostic tool, and test run the machine to ensure it no longer enters stall/derate mode.
