New Holland ENG 3146 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Water Detected In Fuel

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has sensed that the fuel filter's water collection bowl/tank is full. If the water-in-fuel level sensor remains active for a specific duration (e.g., over 5 seconds) without the tank being emptied, this fault path is triggered. The code can also be set by a faulty sensor or a wiring harness defect giving a false 'full' reading.

   Verify if the fault is currently present and active on the dashboard or monitor

   Drain the fuel filter/water separator to see if water is actually present in the fuel system

   If draining does not clear the code, inspect the electrical connections and wiring harness leading to the water-in-fuel sensor for short circuits, open circuits, or corrosion

   Measure the sensor's supply voltage using an electronic service tool or multimeter to ensure the ECU is sending the correct voltage to the sensor

   Shut off the engine and allow the machine to cool down.

   Locate the fuel filter/water separator.

   Typically mounted to the frame or directly on the engine block.

   Place a catch container beneath the separator assembly.

   Open the drain valve located at the bottom of the fuel filter/water separator.

   Drain the fluid until clear diesel fuel (completely free of water) flows out.

   Close the valve securely.

   Be careful not to overtighten it, and dispose of the contaminated fuel properly.

   Cycle the ignition.

   The fault should automatically reset if the sensor is inactive for over 0.5 seconds after debouncing.

   Replace the Sensor (if necessary).

   If the code persists, unscrew the faulty water-in-fuel sensor from the bottom of the filter housing, disconnect the electrical pigtail, and install a replacement sensor.
