ENG 3147

New Holland ENG 3147 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC7: Oil Temperature Too High

Issue description

Triggered when the sensor detects that the engine oil temperature has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold programmed into the system.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Actual Temperature: Use an infrared thermometer or a manual gauge on the oil pan/filter housing to verify the actual oil temperature. If the oil is not actually overheating, the sensor or wiring is likely at fault.

  2. Check Fluid Levels: Ensure the engine oil is at the correct level and not degraded. Also, check the engine coolant level, as the oil cooler relies on the primary cooling system to regulate oil temperature.

  3. Inspect the Cooling System: Check the radiator and oil cooler fins for debris blockages (chaff, dust) and ensure the engine cooling fan is operating correctly.

  4. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the 2-pin connector at the oil temperature sensor for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture. Inspect the wiring harness routing back to the ECM for chafing, short circuits to the battery, or short circuits to ground.

  5. Test the Sensor: Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the temperature sensor (thermistor) against OEM specifications. If it reads an open circuit or out-of-range resistance, the sensor has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Turn off the machine and allow the engine to cool completely to prevent severe burns from hot engine oil.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the engine oil temperature sensor (typically threaded into the engine block near the oil cooler or oil filter housing).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Prepare for Spillage

    Place a catch pan underneath the sensor location to catch any residual oil that escapes during the swap.

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Use a deep socket or wrench to unscrew the faulty sensor.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Thread the new OEM sensor into the port. (Note: Many CNH sensors use a 1/2" x 14 NPTF thread which seals as it tightens; do not over-torque).

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor until it clicks.

  8. Top Up and Test

    Check the engine oil dipstick and top up any lost oil. Start the engine, check the sensor port for leaks, and use a diagnostic service tool to clear the ENG 3147 fault code from the ECM.
