Issue description

The engine control module is monitoring the engine coolant temperature during operation and expects the temperature to increase by a minimum threshold within a specific timeframe. If the temperature does not rise as expected, the system flags this dynamic test failure. This usually points to an engine that is failing to reach operating temperature (often due to a mechanical cooling system issue) or a sensor/wiring fault that is falsely reporting a low temperature.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Actual Engine Temperature: Start the machine and use an infrared laser thermometer on the thermostat housing and cylinder head to see if the engine is actually warming up.

  2. Thermostat Check: If the infrared thermometer shows the engine is staying cold (matching the sensor's low reading), the thermostat is likely stuck open.

  3. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Coolant Temperature Sensor for chafed wires, corrosion inside the 2-pin connector, or loose terminals causing high resistance.

  4. Sensor Resistance Test: If the engine is physically hot but the sensor reads cold, disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter, comparing against OEM specifications for the ambient temperature.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize cooling system (Thermostat Replacement)

    Ensure the engine is completely cool and depressurize the cooling system by slowly removing the radiator cap.

  2. Drain coolant

    Drain the engine coolant into a clean drain pan (if reusing) until the level is below the thermostat housing.

  3. Remove radiator hose

    Remove the radiator hose attached to the thermostat housing.

  4. Remove thermostat housing

    Unbolt and remove the thermostat housing.

  5. Remove old thermostat

    Remove the old thermostat and clean the mating surfaces of all old gasket material.

  6. Install new thermostat

    Install the new thermostat (ensure the jiggle pin/bleed valve is positioned correctly, usually at the top) and a new gasket.

  7. Reinstall housing

    Reinstall the housing, torque bolts to OEM spec, and reattach the hose.

  8. Refill and bleed coolant

    Refill the coolant, bleed the system of air, and run the machine to verify it reaches operating temperature.

  9. Depressurize cooling system (Sensor Replacement)

    Ensure the engine is cool and the cooling system is depressurized.

  10. Locate sensor

    Locate the Coolant Temperature Sensor (typically threaded into the cylinder head or thermostat housing).

  11. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector.

  12. Replace sensor

    Quickly unscrew the old sensor and thread in the new sensor to minimize coolant loss (apply liquid thread sealant to the threads if it does not come pre-applied or use a new crush washer if applicable).

  13. Torque sensor

    Torque the sensor to OEM specifications (do not overtighten, as these are often brass and can snap).

  14. Reconnect wiring

    Reconnect the wiring harness.

  15. Top off coolant

    Top off any lost coolant.

  16. Clear code and verify

    Use a diagnostic tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the ENG 3148 code and run the engine to verify the dynamic test passes.
