New Holland ENG 3150 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): System/Amber Warning Lamp - Short circuit to Battery

The Engine Control Module has detected a short to a 12V power source (battery voltage) on the circuit responsible for illuminating the System/Amber Warning Lamp.

   Turn the key to the ON position without starting the engine and observe if the amber warning lamp stays illuminated constantly or fails to light up during the initial bulb check.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECM to the instrument cluster/dash panel for pinched wires, chafing, or melted insulation that could cause the lamp control wire to touch a 12V power wire.

   Disconnect the instrument cluster and the ECM to check the connector pins for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the lamp circuit to a power circuit.

   With the battery disconnected and the ECM unplugged, use a multimeter to test for continuity between the amber warning lamp control wire and the main 12V battery supply lines.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Access the Instrument Panel

   Remove the necessary dash cowlings or instrument cluster retaining screws to access the rear of the warning lamp assembly.

   Inspect the Bulb and Socket

   Remove the amber warning lamp bulb. Inspect the bulb base and the socket for internal melting or a collapsed filament that could be shorting the circuit. If the socket is melted or the bulb is damaged, replace them.

   Trace and Repair the Short

   If the bulb and socket are fine, trace the specific wire from the lamp socket back to the ECM (often EDC pin B29, depending on the exact model). Locate the area where the wire is shorted to a 12V source.

   Splice and Seal

   Cut out the damaged section of the wire. Splice in a new section of automotive-grade wire of the same gauge, solder the connection, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the instrument cluster and the ECM. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key ON and use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible heavy-duty scanner (like JPRO) to clear the ENG 3150 fault code. Verify the amber warning lamp operates normally.
