New Holland ENG 3151 – Engine ECU: System/Amber Warning Lamp _Short circuit to Ground

The engine controller's output stage responsible for illuminating the Amber Warning Lamp has detected that the circuit's voltage has dropped to zero (grounded out) unexpectedly.

   Visual Inspection of the Lamp: Inspect the physical Amber Warning Lamp assembly. Look for cracked lenses, water intrusion, or melted bulb sockets, which frequently cause internal shorts to ground.

   Harness Isolation Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the Amber Warning Lamp. Use a multimeter to check for continuity to ground on the power supply wire coming from the Engine ECU. If the wire is still shorted to ground: The fault is in the wiring harness (look for chafed wires rubbing against the machine's frame). If the short disappears: The fault is internal to the lamp assembly or the bulb itself.

   Check ECU Pins: Inspect the Engine ECU connector pins (specifically the pin driving the warning lamp) for corrosion or bent pins that might be bridging to a ground pin.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Address the Short

   If wiring is damaged: Trace the harness back from the lamp to the ECU. Locate the pinched or chafed wire. Cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink tubing. Secure the harness away from sharp metal edges using zip ties. If the lamp is faulty: Remove the mounting hardware holding the Amber Warning Lamp. Unplug the pigtail connector and install a replacement lamp assembly.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Plug the lamp back into the harness and reconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Turn the ignition to the ON position. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible OBD scanner to clear the inactive ENG 3151 fault code. Run the machine and verify that the Amber Warning Lamp functions correctly (e.g., flashes when turning/hazards are active) without triggering the code.
