New Holland ENG 3153 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): System/Amber Warning Lamp - Excessive Temperature

Issue description

The internal driver circuit within the Engine Control Module (ECU) that powers the System/Amber Warning Lamp is overheating. The circuit is drawing too much current but has not reached the threshold of a complete dead short to ground.

Check the cause

  1. Verify bulb wattage (incorrect bulb cause): Check if an incorrect, higher-wattage aftermarket bulb was installed in the instrument cluster, which overloads the ECU's internal driver.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness (partial short cause): Check the wiring between the Engine ECU and the instrument cluster for chaffed wiring barely touching the chassis, causing high current draw without blowing a fuse.

  3. Check ECU pins (corrosion/moisture cause): Inspect the specific Engine ECU connector pin responsible for the warning lamp (e.g., Pin B29) for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or melting.

  4. Test the instrument cluster (internal resistance cause): Ensure the printed circuit board does not have internal bridging or corrosion causing excess resistance on the warning lamp circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECU from voltage spikes.

  2. Access the Warning Lamp

    Remove the instrument cluster bezel or access the specific warning lamp panel where the Amber System Warning Lamp is located.

  3. Remove and Inspect the Bulb

    Pull the warning lamp bulb. Check the wattage stamped on the base. If it exceeds the OEM specification (often 1.2W for standard dash indicators), discard it.

  4. Test the Circuit

    Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the wire running from the ECU harness connector to the bulb socket. Check for continuity to ground to rule out a partial short in the harness.

  5. Repair Wiring (If Necessary)

    If a partial short is found, trace the harness back to the ECU, locate the chaffed section, splice in a repair wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

  6. Install Correct Bulb

    Install a new, OEM-spec miniature bulb into the socket.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive ENG 3153 fault code from the Engine ECU.

  8. Retest

    Start the engine and verify that the Amber Warning Lamp functions correctly during the bulb-check phase and that the fault code does not return.
