ENG 3157

New Holland ENG 3157 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Security Check Value Unavailable from Engine

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is not detected on the CAN bus, or the engine dataset registration information was not available from the engine within the required time limit. This triggers an amber warning and can result in the engine failing to start, shutting down unexpectedly, reduced power output, or poor fuel efficiency.

Applies to these machines

  • L220
  • L225
  • SR175
  • C245
  • T4030F
  • T4030N

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECM and the main vehicle controller for physical damage, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  2. Verify that the Engine ECM is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground connection.

  3. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines for proper resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network) and check for shorts to ground or power.

  4. Use a diagnostic tool to see if the ECM is communicating and check if the engine dataset registration information is missing, corrupted, or mismatched.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

If diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring, shorts, or corroded connectors on the CAN bus or ECM power circuits, repair or replace the affected harness sections.

  2. Software / Dataset Registration

If the wiring is intact but the code persists, connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST). Attempt to re-register the engine dataset to the ECM.

  3. ECM Replacement

If the ECM is receiving good power, ground, and CAN continuity, but still fails to communicate or provide the security check value, the ECM has internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  4. Clear Codes

After replacing the ECM or repairing the wiring, use the diagnostic tool or a CAN-bus DTC eraser to clear the fault codes from the system.

  5. Test Run

Cycle the key and start the machine to verify the amber warning is gone and the engine operates without shutting down.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU

The exact OEM part number varies heavily depending on the specific machine model and whether it has an F5C or F5H engine. It must be ordered specific to the machine's PIN/Serial Number and programmed by a dealer.

  • CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connectors
