ENG 3157

New Holland ENG 3157 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM Not Detected on CAN bus

Issue description

The engine dataset registration information was not available from the engine within the time required. The machine's main network has lost communication with the engine controller, or the controller is failing to broadcast its security/dataset credentials over the CAN bus.

Applies to these machines

  • T5.95
  • T5.105
  • T5.115
  • T6 series
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • T8 series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • L316
  • L318
  • L320
  • C-series
  • B110
  • B115
  • CR9040
  • CR9060
  • T6.180
  • L218
  • L220
  • Case SR175
  • Case SV185

Check the cause

  1. Verify the engine dataset matches the machine using the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST), especially if code 3158 is also present.

  2. Check the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines between the Engine ECM and the rest of the machine's network for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

  3. Verify that the Engine ECM is receiving proper voltage by checking all ECM fuses, relays, and main ground straps.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the ECM for water intrusion, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging the ECM to prevent voltage spikes.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connections

Disconnect the main harnesses at the Engine ECM. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent. Reconnect and test the machine.

  3. Test CAN Bus Resistance

With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. If it reads 120 ohms, there is an open circuit between the ECM and the network.

  4. Software Flash / Registration

If the wiring is intact and the ECM is communicating but timing out on the security check, connect the New Holland EST laptop. Re-register the engine dataset to the machine.

  5. Replace the ECM

If the ECM has internal hardware failure (no communication, no 5V reference output, and fails to power up despite good power/ground inputs), the module must be replaced and programmed to the machine.
