New Holland ENG 3158 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): Security Check Value Mismatch from Engine
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an 'Invalid ECM Checksum' or the engine configuration dataset has been lost/corrupted. This condition almost exclusively occurs after the engine ECU has been flashed, modified, or replaced (such as aftermarket tuning or an interrupted software update).
Applies to these machines
10 machines- T7.260
- T7.270
- T7.220
- T7.235
- T7.250
- T6 Series
- T5 Series
- L220
- B90B
- B100B
Check the cause
Verify recent ECU work to see if the tractor recently had its ECU flashed, replaced, or modified by an aftermarket tuner (e.g., DPF/EGR deletes or chip tuning).
Assess engine operation to confirm if the engine starts and runs normally aside from the dashboard error and an RPM limit (derate).
Scan for communication errors using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the ECU is communicating properly with the dashboard/ICU and if it recognizes the current dataset.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Attempt Configuration Restore
Use the CNH EST to perform an 'Engine Configuration' restore. Sometimes the system simply needs to be forced to accept the dataset.
Correct the Checksum (If Tuned)
If the fault appeared immediately after writing a modified file to the ECU, the tuning software failed to correct the checksum. The file must be pulled back out, run through a checksum correction tool (such as MM Flex or WinOLS), and rewritten to the ECU.
Reflash to OEM Stock
If the checksum cannot be corrected or the ECU is corrupted, use the CNH EST to reflash the ECM with the original, unmodified OEM software file.
Clear Codes
Once the correct software/checksum is verified, clear the 3158 fault code from both the Engine ECU and the dashboard controller.
Test Run
Cycle the ignition key, start the engine, and verify that the RPM limit is lifted and the fault does not return.
