New Holland ENG 3160 – Engine ECU: Fan Actuator - Short circuit to Battery
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a short to battery voltage (12V) on the control circuit for the electronic viscous fan clutch (fan actuator). This may result in the fan defaulting to 100% lockup (causing excessive noise and fuel consumption) or failing to engage entirely (causing engine overheating).

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Engine ECU to the fan clutch. Look for chafed wires rubbing against the engine block, belts, or pulleys that could expose the copper wire to a 12V power source.
Connector Check: Disconnect the fan clutch electrical connector. Inspect the pins for corrosion, melting, or fluid intrusion (coolant or oil) which can bridge the power and control pins.
Component vs. Harness Isolation: With the fan clutch disconnected, turn the key to the ON position and re-check the active fault codes. If the code changes from 3160 to 3162, the short circuit is internal to the electronic viscous fan clutch. If the code remains 3160, the short to battery voltage is located within the machine's wiring harness.
Voltage Test: Using a multimeter, probe the signal wire on the harness side of the fan connector with the key ON. If it reads a constant 12V when it shouldn't, trace the wire back to the ECU to find the short.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
If the harness is faulty: Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Trace circuit
Trace the fan control circuit back to the Engine ECU and locate the damaged section of the wire (often near tight bends or hot engine components).
Repair wire
Cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.
Secure harness
Secure the harness away from moving parts using zip ties or loom clamps.
Disconnect battery
If the Fan Clutch is internally shorted (Most Common): Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Move fan shroud
Remove the fan shroud retaining bolts and push the shroud back over the fan to gain clearance.
Disconnect connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the fan clutch.
Loosen fan clutch
Using a fan clutch wrench or a large adjustable wrench, loosen the fan clutch nut from the water pump/pulley hub. Note: Many of these clutches use a left-hand (reverse) thread (e.g., M30 LH Thread). You will need to turn it clockwise to loosen it.
Remove assembly
Carefully lift the fan clutch and fan blade assembly out of the engine bay.
Transfer fan blades
Unbolt the fan blades from the old clutch and transfer them to the new electronic viscous fan clutch. Torque the bolts to OEM spec.
Install new assembly
Thread the new assembly onto the water pump hub (counter-clockwise for LH threads) and tighten securely.
Reinstall components
Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall the fan shroud.
Finalize repair
Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes via the dash or diagnostic tool, and run the engine to ensure the fan engages properly and the code does not return.
