New Holland ENG 3161 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Fan Actuator - Short circuit to Ground

Issue description

The ECU detects that the voltage on the fan actuator control circuit has dropped to zero unexpectedly. This indicates that the power or signal wire is physically touching a metal ground (chassis/engine block) or that the internal solenoid of the fan actuator has shorted out against its own casing.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the viscous fan drive for areas where the wire loom may have rubbed against the engine block, pulleys, or frame, causing bare wires to touch ground.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the fan actuator and inspect the pins for water ingress, corrosion, or melting, which can bridge the pins to ground.

  3. Perform a component vs. wiring isolation test: with the fan actuator disconnected, turn the key to the ON position (engine off). If the code changes to 3162 (Fan Actuator - Open Load), the short is internal to the viscous fan drive. If 3161 remains active, the short is in the wiring harness.

  4. Use a digital multimeter to test the fan control wire for continuity to ground while both the ECU and the fan actuator are unplugged.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

  2. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the viscous fan drive.

  3. Relieve belt tension

    Use a breaker bar or tensioner tool to relieve tension on the engine serpentine belt, and slip the belt off the fan pulley.

  4. Remove fan blades

    Remove the bolts securing the fan blade assembly to the viscous drive. Carefully set the plastic fan blades aside (or leave them resting inside the fan shroud if space is tight).

  5. Remove viscous drive

    Remove the viscous fan drive from the engine/water pump hub. Note: Depending on the exact tractor model, the drive is either secured by a 6-bolt flange or a large central reverse-thread nut (e.g., LH Thread M30 x 2.00).

  6. Install new viscous drive

    Mount the new viscous fan drive assembly and torque the mounting bolts/nut to OEM specifications.

  7. Reattach fan blades

    Reattach the fan blades to the new viscous drive.

  8. Reinstall serpentine belt

    Reinstall the serpentine belt, ensuring it is routed correctly and the tensioner is fully engaged.

  9. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the fan actuator electrical connector.

  10. Clear fault code and verify

    Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3161 fault code. Verify that the fan engages properly as the engine reaches operating temperature.
