New Holland ENG 3162 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC: Fan Actuator - Open Load
Issue description
The engine's computer has detected a break or 'open circuit' in the electrical circuit that controls the electronic viscous fan drive. Because the circuit is open, the controller cannot detect the expected electrical load from the fan clutch coil, meaning the fan cannot be electronically commanded to engage or adjust its speed.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Check the electrical pigtail and connector directly at the viscous fan clutch. Look for unplugged connectors, backed-out pins, or severe corrosion.
Harness Check: Trace the wiring harness from the fan clutch back to the Engine ECM. Look for chafed wires, cuts, or pinch points that could have severed the power or ground wire.
Coil Resistance Test: Disconnect the fan clutch connector. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the terminals on the fan clutch side. If the meter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the internal electromagnetic coil inside the fan clutch has failed.
Voltage Supply Check: Turn the ignition key to the ON position and check for reference voltage at the harness-side connector to ensure the ECM is actively sending a signal to the fan.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the fan shroud or protective guards to gain access to the engine cooling fan.
Disconnect the electrical connector linking the viscous fan clutch to the engine wiring harness.
Unbolt the plastic/metal fan blade assembly from the viscous fan clutch hub.
Carefully set the fan blades aside.
Unbolt the viscous fan clutch assembly from the engine water pump or pulley hub.
Install the new electronic viscous fan clutch and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
Reattach the fan blade assembly to the new clutch.
Reconnect the fan actuator electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Reinstall the fan shroud and guards.
Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and verify that the ENG 3162 fault code has cleared from the dash/monitor.
