New Holland ENG 3163 – Engine ECU (EDC7 / Engine Controller): Fan Actuator - Temperature Too High
Issue description
This code indicates that the electronic viscous fan drive (which controls the engine cooling fan speed) is operating above its safe temperature threshold, or the internal actuator coil is drawing excessive current and overheating.

Check the cause
Inspect the Cooling Package: Check the radiators, intercoolers, and condensers for severe blockages (chaff, mud, dust). A blocked cooling package forces the fan clutch to slip continuously to try and draw air, leading to severe overheating of the viscous fluid and actuator.
Wiring and Connector Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the viscous fan drive. Look for melted wires, chafing, or corrosion at the connector that could cause high resistance or a short circuit.
Visual Inspection of the Clutch: Check the front of the viscous fan drive for signs of leaking silicone fluid. If the fluid has leaked out, the clutch will fail to engage properly and overheat.
Coil Resistance Test: Test the fan actuator coil with a multimeter to determine if the internal electronics have shorted out.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery.

Remove the engine side panels and unbolt the cooling fan shroud.
Remove the engine side panels and unbolt the cooling fan shroud to gain access to the fan assembly.
Disconnect the electrical connector.
Disconnect the electrical connector leading to the viscous fan drive actuator.
Unbolt the viscous fan drive assembly.
Unbolt the viscous fan drive assembly from the engine water pump/pulley. Note: The main mounting shaft is typically an M30 x 2.00 Left-Hand (LH) thread. You must turn it clockwise to loosen it.
Extract the fan and clutch assembly.
Carefully extract the fan and clutch assembly from the engine bay.
Remove the fan blades and transfer to the new viscous drive.
Remove the fan blades from the old viscous drive (usually secured by 6 x M8 bolts on a 152.4 mm bolt circle) and transfer the blades to the new viscous drive.
Thread the new viscous fan drive onto the pulley.
Thread the new viscous fan drive onto the pulley (counter-clockwise to tighten due to the LH thread) and torque to OEM specifications.
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the harness is secured away from the spinning fan blades.
Reinstall the fan shroud and engine side panels.
Reinstall the fan shroud and engine side panels.
Reconnect the battery and clear the fault code.
Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the ENG 3163 fault code and verify proper fan modulation.
