New Holland ENG 3168 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Filter Heater Relay - Open Load

The engine control system uses a relay to supply power to the fuel filter heater, which prevents diesel fuel from gelling in cold weather. An "Open Load" condition means that the control module is trying to send a signal to energize the relay, but it does not detect any electrical load (current draw) on the circuit. This typically indicates a broken wire, an unplugged connector, a blown fuse, or a relay with a burned-out internal coil.

   Relay Swap Test: Swap the Fuel Filter Heater Relay with an identical, known-working relay to see if the fault clears.

   Fuse Inspection: Check the fuse panel for any blown fuses related to the engine control system or the fuel heater circuit.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the relay socket for pushed-out pins, spread terminals, or heavy corrosion.

   Wiring Continuity: Check for continuity on the control wire running from the Engine ECM harness to the relay socket, and verify the relay socket has a solid ground connection.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Relay Panel

   Open the machine's electrical center (location varies by model; often in the cab console or under the hood near the firewall).

   Remove the Faulty Component

   Pull the Fuel Filter Heater Relay from its socket.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or a corroded socket terminal, splice in a new wire or replace the damaged terminal pin.

   Install the New Relay

   Plug the replacement relay firmly into the socket, ensuring all pins seat correctly.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition key to the ON position.

   Clear Codes

   Use the machine's onboard display or a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive ENG 3168 code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
