New Holland ENG 3169 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Fuel Filter Heater Relay - Signal Not Plausible

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an unexpected or out-of-range electrical feedback signal from the fuel filter heater relay circuit. This indicates a discrepancy between the commanded state and the actual feedback, which typically points to a faulty relay, a blown fuse, a wiring harness issue, or a failure within the fuel filter heater element itself.

   Inspect the fuel filter heater relay and its socket in the main fuse/relay panel for signs of corrosion, heat damage, melting, or loose terminal tension

   Check the fuse associated with the fuel filter heater circuit. If blown, locate the source of the short circuit before replacing

   Perform a relay swap test by exchanging the fuel filter heater relay with a known good relay of the same type (e.g., horn or work light relay)

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU, relay panel, and fuel filter heater element for chafed wires, breaks, or rubbing

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the fuel filter heater element to check for water ingress, corrosion, or melted pins, and test the element for an internal short to ground

   Preparation

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Replace Faulty Components

   If the relay failed the swap test or shows physical damage, replace it with a new OEM relay. If the fuse was blown and the heater element is shorted internally, replace the fuel filter heater element assembly.

   Repair Wiring

   If any chafed or broken wires were found during the harness inspection, cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire of the same gauge, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink tubing.

   Clean Connections

   Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the relay terminals and the fuel filter heater connector to prevent future moisture intrusion and corrosion.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear Codes

   Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to the machine's diagnostic port. Clear the inactive ENG 3169 fault code.

   Start the engine and let it run. Verify that the check engine light remains off and the fault code does not return.
