New Holland ENG 3179 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CAN Bus Communication: CAN message not received from Vehicle Controller (BC2EDC2)

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) failed to receive an expected Controller Area Network (CAN) data message from the main Vehicle Controller within the required timeframe.

   Check for recent programming or flashing of the control module, which can trigger temporary CAN codes

   Scan the system for other CAN-related fault codes (such as 3180, 3182) to determine if there is a global network failure rather than a single module issue

   Clear and Retest

   Connect your diagnostic tool, clear the ENG 3179 fault code, and cycle the key/run the machine to see if the code returns. This rules out temporary communication glitches or programming-induced codes.

   Inspect the CAN Bus Circuit

   If the code is active, physically inspect the CAN bus wiring harness running between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Vehicle Controller. Look for chafed wires, pinch points, or melted insulation.

   Check Connectors

   Disconnect the harness at the ECU and the Vehicle Controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with contact cleaner and ensure a tight fit.

   Verify Power and Ground

   Ensure the Vehicle Controller is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection. A controller dropping offline due to low voltage will stop broadcasting CAN messages.

   Test CAN Resistance

   With the batteries disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins on the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms.

   Module Replacement/Reprogramming

   If the wiring, terminating resistors, and connections are all intact, the Vehicle Controller or the ECU itself may have suffered an internal failure and will require replacement and dealer calibration.
