New Holland ENG 3180 – Engine ECU (EDC): CAN Bus Communication: Timed Out of CAN Message VCM2EDC

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit is no longer receiving the expected data packets from the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) over the CAN bus network within the required time limit.

Check the cause

  1. Verify System Voltage: Load-test the battery and ensure voltage does not drop below 10.5V during cranking. Verify the alternator output is stable.

  2. Inspect Ground Connections: Check the battery negative connections, the engine block ground strap, and the main frame grounds for corrosion or looseness.

  3. Check Connectors for Moisture/Corrosion: Inspect the main connector blocks at both the Engine ECU and the VCM. Look for pushed-out pins, water ingress, or green corrosion.

  4. Test CAN Bus Network Health: With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms. 120 ohms indicates an open circuit or missing resistor; 0 ohms indicates shorted wires.

  5. Check for Accompanying Codes: Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to see if the VCM is logging its own power/ground faults, which would explain why it stopped broadcasting messages to the Engine ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the CAN network.

  2. Clean Grounds

    Remove the main chassis and engine ground straps. Clean the mating surfaces with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed, reattach, and seal with a protective dielectric spray.

  3. Service the Connectors

    Disconnect the wiring harnesses at the VCM and the Engine ECU. Spray the pins with electrical contact cleaner, allow them to dry, and apply a light coat of dielectric grease to prevent moisture ingress.

  4. Repair the Harness

    If your continuity tests revealed a broken CAN wire between the VCM and ECU, locate the chafe point (commonly where harnesses route around the cab or engine block). When repairing CAN bus wiring, you must maintain the original wire length and the twisted-pair configuration to prevent data interference. Solder and heat-shrink the repair; do not use cheap crimp connectors.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules and the battery. Connect the New Holland EST (or a compatible heavy-duty DTC eraser) to the diagnostic port and clear the inactive fault codes.

  6. Test Run

    Cycle the key and operate the machine to verify the ENG 3180 code does not return. If the wiring is 100% intact and the code persists, the VCM may have an internal failure and require replacement/reprogramming by a dealer.
