New Holland ENG 3182 – ENGINE: CAN Bus Communication: Timed Out of CAN Message RxCCVS

The Engine Control Module (ECM/EDC) has lost communication with the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) or Body Computer (BC) regarding a specific J1939 CAN bus message (RxCCVS). When the ECM does not receive this message within the expected time frame, it logs a timeout error.

   Check for undervoltage at the Body Computer (BC) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM), as a voltage drop can cause the CAN controller to stop broadcasting

   Inspect the CAN cable connecting the BC/VCM to the Engine ECM for disconnected plugs, broken wires (open circuits), or short circuits

   Verify the presence and proper connection of the BC/VCM on the CAN network

   Verify that the CAN configuration in the Body Controller or VCM is correct and has not been corrupted

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during harness inspection.

   Inspect Connectors

   Locate the Engine ECM and the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) / Body Computer. Disconnect the harness connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean and reseat if necessary.

   Test CAN Bus Integrity

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. With the battery disconnected, a healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms (due to two 120-ohm terminating resistors in parallel). If it reads 120 ohms, a resistor or a segment of the wiring is broken.

   Check VCM Power and Ground

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Back-probe the power and ground supply pins at the VCM/BC to ensure it is receiving full battery voltage. Repair any damaged power supply relays or blown fuses.

   Repair Wiring

   If a break or short is found in the CAN communication lines between the VCM and the ECM, repair or replace the affected harness section.

   Module Replacement/Reprogramming

   If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact, the fault lies within a defective CAN controller inside the Body Computer or Vehicle Control Module. The module will need to be reflashed by a dealer or replaced.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect all components, power on the machine, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3182 code. Test run the machine to ensure the RxCCVS message is successfully received and the code does not return.
