New Holland ENG 3183 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-VR (When Active)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) did not receive the expected 'TSC1-VR' (Torque/Speed Control Request) message from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) within the allotted time limit, preventing proper coordination of torque and speed requests.

Check the cause

  1. Check for multiple CAN codes (e.g., 3184, 3185, 3178) to determine if the entire CAN bus circuit is compromised rather than a single module.

  2. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the machine off and battery disconnected, measure resistance between CAN HI (Yellow) and CAN LO (Green) pins. A healthy bus reads 60 ohms. A reading of 120 ohms indicates a failed or disconnected terminating resistor.

  3. Visually inspect the CAN line wiring between the Engine ECU and the TCU for chafing, corrosion, or broken wires.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Repair/Replace Terminating Resistors

    If your resistance test yielded 120 ohms, locate the terminating resistors (often located near the ECU/TCU or at the physical ends of the wiring harness). Unplug the suspect resistor and test it directly. If it does not read 120 ohms, replace it.

  3. Harness Repair

    If the resistance was correct (60 ohms) but the fault persists, trace the yellow and green CAN wires between the TCU and the Engine ECU. Repair any broken wires or damaged insulation using proper CAN bus wiring repair sections (maintaining the twisted pair configuration).

  4. Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the harnesses at both the Engine ECU and the TCU. Inspect the pins for pushed-back terminals, moisture, or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and securely reseat the connectors.

  5. Module Reprogramming/Replacement

    If the wiring and resistors are perfectly intact, the fault may stem from a software glitch or a failed ECU/TCU. The control unit may need to be flashed/reprogrammed by a dealer. If the internal CAN transceiver has failed, the ECU will require replacement.

  6. Clear and Retest

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and run the machine to verify the code does not return.
