New Holland ENG 3184 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN Message TSC1-VR (When Inactive)

Issue description

The Engine ECU has lost communication or timed out while waiting to receive the expected TSC1-VR CAN bus message from the transmission or vehicle controller, preventing the engine controller from verifying torque or speed requests.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., TF, TSC1-PE, BC2EDC2) which would indicate a total CAN bus failure rather than an isolated module issue

  2. Inspect the CAN line wiring between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Vehicle Control Module (VCM) for cable breaks, chafing, or short circuits

  3. Measure the terminal resistance of the CAN bus to ensure it is suitable (typically 60 ohms across the network, utilizing 120-ohm terminating resistors at each end)

  4. Verify that the TCU/VCM is receiving proper power and ground; check for a blown fuse or bad relay that could take the transmission controller offline

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the machine's battery before probing ECU pins or repairing CAN wiring.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Disconnect the harnesses at the Engine ECU and the TCU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Clean and apply dielectric grease if minor corrosion is found.

  3. Test CAN Continuity

    Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the Engine ECU and the TCU. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground.

  4. Check/Replace Terminating Resistors

    If the CAN bus resistance is out of spec (e.g., 120 ohms instead of 60 ohms, or completely open), locate and replace the faulty CAN terminating resistor.

  5. Repair Harness

    If a break is found in the wiring, use an OEM CAN-bus wire harness repair kit to splice in new wiring, ensuring the twisted pair is maintained to prevent electromagnetic interference.

  6. Module Replacement

    If the wiring, resistors, and power supplies are all intact, the fault lies internally within the TCU (failing to send) or the Engine ECU (failing to receive). Replace the faulty module and flash it with the correct dataset using the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and test operate the machine to ensure the TSC1-VR message is actively communicating.
