ENG 3186

New Holland ENG 3186 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Cylinder 1 Warning - Fast Decay Error

Issue description

The engine's monitoring system has detected a failure of the "fast decay impulse" at the No. 1 cylinder fuel injector. A "fast decay error" means that the injector valve is staying open longer than intended.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.390
  • T8.420
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 260
  • Magnum 290
  • Magnum 315
  • Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine electrical harness in the No. 1 cylinder injector circuit for chafing, short circuits, open circuits, or high resistance.

  2. Inspect the ECU and injector connector pins for oxidation, corrosion, or loose fitment.

  3. Measure the resistance of the No. 1 cylinder injector solenoid valve to see if it is out of specification.

  4. Use the electronic Service Tool (e.g., CNH EST) to run a cylinder cutout test or nozzle operation test to verify the mechanical and electrical failure of the injector.

Repair steps

  1. Connect the diagnostic service tool to verify that fault code ENG 3186 is active.

Verify the fault code is active using the diagnostic service tool.

  2. Clean the area around the Cylinder 1 fuel injector to prevent debris from entering the engine block or fuel system.

Ensure the area is clean before proceeding.

  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure.

Safely relieve pressure from the fuel system.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 1 fuel injector.

Remove the electrical connection to the injector.

  5. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the injector.

Note: High-pressure fuel lines are often single-use and may need to be replaced depending on the exact engine manual.

  6. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and extract the failed No. 1 fuel injector.

Extract the faulty injector from the engine block.

  7. Install the new OEM replacement injector with new O-rings and sealing washers.

Ensure new seals are used during installation.

  8. Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications.

Secure the injector with the hold-down clamp.

  9. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and the electrical connector.

Reattach the fuel line and electrical connections.

  10. Use the diagnostic service tool to clear the fault codes, prime the fuel system, and run the engine to verify the repair.

Clear codes, prime the system, and test the engine.
