New Holland ENG 3187 – Engine ECU: Cylinder1 Warning - Application Dependent
Issue description
The Engine Control Module has detected an anomaly on the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 1. This indicates an implausible signal, a mechanical response fault, or an unclassifiable error in the injector's current/voltage waveform, violating programmed operating parameters.

Check the cause
Verify that the battery voltage is sufficient and the ECM is receiving proper power, as low voltage can cause injector driver anomalies.
Inspect the engine wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the Cylinder 1 injector for chafing, melted insulation, or corrosion, particularly near high-heat areas or where it passes through the valve cover.
Disconnect the Cylinder 1 injector and check for oil intrusion into the electrical connector or bent/loose pins.
Measure the resistance (ohms) across the Cylinder 1 injector solenoid pins and compare it to the OEM specification for your specific engine.
Perform a swap test: swap the Cylinder 1 injector with the Cylinder 2 injector, clear codes, and run the engine. If the code changes to ENG 3191, the injector is internally faulty. If the code remains ENG 3187, the issue is in the wiring harness or the ECU driver.
Repair steps
Disconnect
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Remove
Remove the engine valve cover or upper access panels to expose the fuel injectors.
Disconnect
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Cylinder 1 injector.
Clean
Thoroughly clean the area around the injector to prevent debris from falling into the cylinder.
Remove
Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the Cylinder 1 injector. (Cap the rail fitting to prevent contamination).
Remove
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt.
Extract
Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head using an appropriate puller tool if necessary.
Clean
Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no old copper washer material is left behind.
Install
Install the new injector equipped with a new copper crush washer and new O-rings.
Install
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the specific OEM torque spec.
Install
Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec.
Reconnect
Reconnect the injector electrical connector and reinstall the valve cover.
Reconnect
Reconnect the battery.
Calibrate
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Clear the fault codes and enter the new injector's IQA/Trim code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU so it can properly calibrate the fuel delivery for that cylinder.
Test
Prime the fuel system and start the engine to verify the repair.
