ENG 319

New Holland ENG 319 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller: Real Time Clock in controller has lost power.

Issue description

The internal clock within the controller—which is responsible for tracking the date and time for data logging, fault stamping, and maintenance monitors—has experienced a power interruption, or its backup battery voltage has dropped below the acceptable threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • TG Series tractors
  • T9 Series tractors
  • T9000 Series tractors
  • MXM / TM Series tractors
  • TM 175
  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the ECM and engine harness connector pins for dirt, corrosion, or damage.

  2. Inspect the engine harness for short circuits or open circuits that could interrupt constant power to the ECM.

  3. Measure the real-time clock battery voltage at the ECM harness (should typically read between 3.3 and 3.6 VDC).

  4. Using a diagnostic tool (New Holland EST or Cummins INSITE), check the 'Advanced ECM Data' to see if the real-time clock signal is being sourced from an external OEM datalink device.

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Repair Wiring

Disconnect the battery and clean any dirty pins on the ECM harness connectors. Repair any damaged wiring found during the diagnostic checks.

  2. Address Datalink Issues

If the diagnostic tool shows the real-time clock is sourced from an external OEM datalink device, repair or replace the datalink device per the manufacturer's service information.

  3. Reset the Clock

If the machine is equipped with a real-time clock battery, cancel the real-time clock from the datalink setting. Use the electronic service tool to manually set the ECM Date and Time to match the Local PC Date and Time.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the time is reset and connections are secured, use the electronic service tool to clear the fault codes. Cycle the key to verify the code does not return.

  5. ECM Replacement

If the wiring is intact, the external voltage is correct, and the code cannot be cleared, the ECM's internal battery/hardware has failed. On many modern ECMs, this internal battery is non-serviceable, requiring a full ECM replacement and reprogramming.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller

Required if the internal clock hardware/battery has failed and is non-serviceable

  • Real-Time Clock Battery

If the specific engine model utilizes an external/serviceable clock battery

  • Engine Wiring Harness

If diagnostic checks reveal unrepairable shorts/opens

  • OEM Datalink Device

If the clock signal is sourced externally and the module has failed
