New Holland ENG 3196 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Injector Cylinder 3 Warning - Open Load
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the Engine Control Unit has detected an "Open Load" (open circuit) in the electrical circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder #3. This means electrical current is not flowing through the injector solenoid coil, preventing the injector from firing. The underlying condition is typically a broken wire, a disconnected or corroded harness connector, or an internal failure (open coil) within the fuel injector itself.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the cylinder #3 fuel injector. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or rodent damage.
Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical plug at the cylinder #3 injector. Check for pushed-out pins, water intrusion, or corrosion.
Coil Resistance Test (Ohm Test): Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins on the cylinder #3 fuel injector itself. Compare this reading to a known good injector (like cylinder #1 or #2). If the reading shows infinite resistance (OL), the injector coil is internally broken and the injector must be replaced.
Harness Continuity Test: If the injector tests good, check for continuity on both wires from the injector connector back to the ECU harness connector.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Ensure the engine is off and high-pressure fuel has dissipated before opening the system.
Access the Injector
Remove any engine covers or valve cover components necessary to access the cylinder #3 fuel injector.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty injector.
Remove Fuel Lines
Clean the area around the injector to prevent debris from entering the cylinder. Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the cylinder #3 injector. Cap the rail fitting immediately.
Extract the Injector
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector from the cylinder head.
Prep for Installation
Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head. Ensure the old copper sealing washer was removed with the old injector and is not stuck in the bore.
Install New Injector
Install the new OEM injector using a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (leave slightly loose at the injector if bleeding is required, then tighten to spec). Reconnect the electrical plug.
Bleed and Clear
Reconnect the battery. Prime the fuel system to bleed out air. Use the CNH EASy diagnostic tool (or equivalent scanner) to clear the ENG 3196 fault code.
Test
Start the engine and check for fuel leaks and smooth operation.
