ENG 3198

New Holland ENG 3198 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Cylinder 4 Warning - Fast Decay Error

Issue description

This fault code indicates an electrical issue within the fuel injector circuit for Cylinder 4. A 'Fast Decay Error' means the current decay in the injector coil is abnormal, causing the injector valve to remain open longer than intended. The ECU will typically switch off the affected injector bank to protect the engine, resulting in a severe engine derate (often limiting RPMs to 1,500) and a noticeable misfire.

Applies to these machines

  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T9
  • T8.300
  • T8.390
  • T8.410
  • CR Revelation
  • CR7.90
  • CR8.90
  • CR9.90
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Axial-Flow

Check the cause

  1. Check the injector wiring harness for short circuits to ground, short circuits between cables, or open circuits.

  2. Inspect the valve cover gasket pass-through connector for engine oil intrusion or fretted pins causing resistance issues.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the Cylinder 4 injector solenoid directly at the injector terminals and compare it to a known good injector.

  4. Inspect the pins at the Engine ECU harness connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing or ECU damage.

  2. Access the Injectors

Remove the engine valve cover to gain access to the fuel injectors and the internal injector wiring harness.

  3. Replace the Harness (If Faulty)

If the wiring harness failed the continuity/short test or shows signs of oil intrusion at the pass-through, disconnect the harness from all injectors and the main engine harness. Install the new internal wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Injector (If Faulty)

If the wiring is intact but the injector solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the high-pressure fuel line and the injector hold-down clamp for Cylinder 4. Extract the injector. Clean the injector cup/sleeve thoroughly. Install the new injector with new O-rings and a new copper crush washer. Torque the hold-down bolt to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassemble

Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel lines (it is highly recommended to use new injector lines, as they are often single-use crush fittings).

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use an electronic service tool (like CNH E.A.Sy) to clear the ENG 3198 fault code.

  7. Test Run

Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine runs smoothly without derating.
