New Holland ENG 3200 – Engine ECU: Injector Cylinder 4 Warning - Open Load

Issue description

The engine control module has detected an open circuit in the electrical circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder #4. This means electrical current cannot flow through the circuit, which is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected or corroded plug, or a failed (burnt out/open) solenoid coil inside the injector itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the cylinder 4 injector for chafed wires, rodent damage, or breaks.

  2. Unplug the connector at the cylinder 4 injector and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Reconnect it to ensure it wasn't simply a loose connection.

  3. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two pins on the cylinder 4 injector itself. Compare this reading to the injectors on cylinders 1, 2, or 3. If cylinder 4 reads 'OL' (Open Loop/Infinite resistance) or is significantly out of specification compared to the others, the injector has failed internally.

  4. If the injector tests good, disconnect the main harness at the Engine ECU and check for continuity on the two wires running from the ECU plug to the cylinder 4 injector plug.

Repair steps

  1. Prep

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts. Thoroughly clean the area around the cylinder 4 injector to prevent dirt from falling into the cylinder or fuel system.

  2. Remove Lines

    Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the cylinder 4 injector. Note: Immediately cap the rail fitting and the injector inlet to prevent contamination.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the injector.

  4. Extract

    Remove the injector hold-down clamp bolt and the clamp. Carefully pull the injector straight up and out of the cylinder head.

  5. Clean & Inspect

    Ensure the old copper sealing washer came out with the injector. Clean the injector bore in the cylinder head.

  6. Install

    Install the new injector. You must use a new copper crush washer and O-ring.

  7. Reassemble

    Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to OEM specifications. Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line and torque the fittings. Reconnect the electrical plug.

  8. Finalize

    Reconnect the battery. Bleed the fuel system if required by your specific engine manual.

  9. ECU Programming

    Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Note: Depending on the exact engine generation (especially Tier 4 F5H engines), you may need to use a diagnostic tool to enter the new injector's IQA/Trim code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the Engine ECU so it can properly balance fuel delivery.
