New Holland ENG 3204 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: Cylinder 5 Warning - Open Load
Issue description
This code indicates an electrical fault where the control module detects an 'open circuit' (infinite resistance or a broken connection) on the circuit supplying power or ground to the fuel injector for Cylinder 5. This means the injector is not receiving the electrical signal required to fire, which will result in a misfire, rough running, and loss of power.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the Cylinder 5 fuel injector for chafed wires, broken wires, melted insulation, or loose/corroded connector pins.
Perform a harness continuity test by disconnecting the harness from the Engine ECU and the Cylinder 5 injector, checking for continuity on both wires between the ECU pins and the injector connector.
Measure the resistance across the two pins directly on the Cylinder 5 fuel injector solenoid to check for an internal failure (indicated by an 'OL' or infinite resistance reading).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts or ECU damage during the repair.
Access the Injector
Remove the engine valve cover or acoustic covers as necessary to gain access to the fuel injectors and the injector wiring harness.
Address the Wiring
If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire or damaged connector, repair the wiring harness using an OEM pigtail connector, or replace the injector wiring harness entirely.
Replace the Injector
If the injector solenoid tested open: Clean the area around the Cylinder 5 injector to prevent debris from entering the cylinder. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to the injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Extract the injector and discard the old copper sealing washer. Install the new injector with a new copper crush washer and torque the hold-down clamp to OEM specifications. Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector to the injector. Reinstall any removed engine covers.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3204 fault code from the EDC.
Test Run
Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine runs smoothly without logging the code again. (Note: Depending on the exact engine model, a new injector may require its IMA calibration code to be programmed into the ECU using a diagnostic tool).
