New Holland ENG 3208 – Engine ECU / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Cylinder6 Warning - Open Load

Issue description

The engine control module has detected a break in the electrical circuit (an "open circuit" or infinite resistance) for the fuel injector on cylinder number 6. Because the electrical path is broken, the injector solenoid cannot energize, preventing fuel from being delivered to that cylinder. This will result in an engine misfire, rough running, and a noticeable loss of power.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the engine wiring harness leading to the cylinder 6 injector (typically the rearmost cylinder near the cab). Look for chafed wires, rodent damage, or a disconnected plug.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the cylinder 6 injector. Check for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or oil intrusion (especially if the harness passes through the valve cover).

  3. Injector Coil Resistance Test: Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins directly on the cylinder 6 injector. If the reading is "OL" (Open Loop / infinite ohms), the injector's internal solenoid has failed and the injector must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the injector tests good (shows a low ohm reading), the fault is in the wiring. Disconnect the main harness at the EDC and test for continuity on both wires between the EDC connector and the injector connector to locate the break.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    If the wiring is faulty: Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  2. Locate harness break

    If the wiring is faulty: Locate the break in the harness using your continuity test results.

  3. Repair or replace wiring

    If the wiring is faulty: Repair the broken wire using appropriate weatherproof splices, or replace the damaged engine wiring harness section.

  4. Reconnect and test

    If the wiring is faulty: Reconnect all plugs, clear the code, and test run.

  5. Disconnect battery

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable.

  6. Clean injector area

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Thoroughly clean the area around the cylinder 6 injector to prevent dirt from falling into the engine.

  7. Remove high-pressure fuel line

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the injector. Note: Immediately cap the rail and injector fittings to prevent contamination.

  8. Disconnect electrical connector

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Disconnect the electrical connector from the injector.

  9. Remove hold-down clamp

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt.

  10. Extract injector

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head.

  11. Prepare new injector

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Prepare the new injector by ensuring it has a new copper sealing washer at the tip and new O-rings.

  12. Install new injector

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Seat the new injector into the cylinder head and reinstall the hold-down clamp, torquing the bolt to exact OEM specifications.

  13. Reinstall fuel line

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Reinstall the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec.

  14. Reconnect electricals

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  15. Enter IQA/trim code

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Using a New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or equivalent diagnostic scanner, enter the new injector's IQA/trim code (printed on the top of the new injector) into the EDC so the module can properly calibrate fuel delivery.

  16. Clear code and test

    If the fuel injector is faulty: Clear the ENG 3208 fault code, prime the fuel system, and test run the engine to verify the misfire is gone and there are no fuel leaks.
