ENG 3210

New Holland ENG 3210 – Engine ECU: Injector Solenoid: Short Circuit in Injection Bank 1 (all injectors of the same bank can be affected)

Issue description

An electrical failure—either a short circuit to ground/power or an open circuit—in the wiring harness or the internal solenoid coil of the fuel injectors on Bank 1. This can disable the entire bank, causing a severe misfire or engine stall.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Verify that the wiring and connectors are free of damage. Inspect the Engine ECU and all four injector connections. All connections must be secure, tight, and free of corrosion, abrasion, and damage.

  2. Harness Routing Check: Inspect the harness from the ECU to all four injectors. Verify that the harness is free of melting, chafing against the engine block, and incorrect attachment.

  3. Resistance Testing (Wiggle Test): Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the injector circuits. Wiggle the harness during measurement to reveal any intermittent shorts or open conditions.

  4. Isolate the Short: Disconnect the injectors on Bank 1 one at a time. If the short circuit disappears when a specific injector is unplugged, that injector's solenoid is internally shorted. If the short remains with all injectors unplugged, the wiring harness is at fault.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. If the diagnostic tests point to a wiring issue, repair the chafed/shorted section of the Engine Injector Wiring Harness or replace the harness entirely.

  3. If an injector is internally shorted, clean the area around the fuel injectors thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the engine.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty injector.

  5. Remove the high-pressure fuel lines.

    Cap all open fuel ports immediately to prevent contamination.

  6. Unscrew the injector support fastening screws, disassemble the injector supports, and carefully pull the injector out of the cylinder head.

  7. Install new O-rings and copper sealing washers on the new injector.

  8. Insert the new injector into the bore.

    Ensure the holes for the fuel return all face the correct, uniform direction.

  9. Reinstall the injector support clamps and torque the retaining nuts to OEM specifications.

    e.g., 24 N·m / 18 ft-lbs for standard CNH hardware, though verify with your specific engine serial number.

  10. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel lines and the electrical harness.

  11. Reconnect the battery, bleed the fuel system of air, and start the engine.

  12. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear code ENG 3210 and verify it does not return during a test run.
