ENG 3211

New Holland ENG 3211 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Bank1 - Injection Cable Short circuit Low Side to Ground

Issue description

The ECU detects a short circuit to the chassis ground on the low-side switching branch of the injection cable for Bank 1. This prevents the ECU from properly energizing the injectors on that bank, leading to misfires, rough running, or engine shutdown.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.275
  • T8.300
  • T8.360
  • T8.390
  • T8.435
  • CR9090
  • CR7.90
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation
  • Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)
  • AF 7230 Combines

Check the cause

  1. Check harness resistance: Disconnect the engine injector harness from the ECU and check the resistance on the ECU side between the specific pins for Bank 1.

  2. Check injector continuity: Remove the injector cover and disconnect the harness from the Bank 1 injectors.

  3. Test for internal short: Use a multi-meter to check for continuity on the injector itself, from the terminal to the chassis ground. There should not be continuity.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing or further ECU damage.

  2. Access the Harness

Remove the engine valve/injector cover to gain access to the internal injector wiring harness and the fuel injectors.

  3. Isolate the Fault

Perform the continuity tests mentioned above to determine if the fault lies in an injector or the harness.

  4. Repair or Replace

If the harness is shorted: Locate the grounded conductor and repair the damaged wire using proper heat-shrink connectors, or replace the entire engine injector harness. If an injector is shorted: Remove the high-pressure fuel lines and the hold-down clamp for the faulty injector. Extract the injector and replace it with a new unit.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the injector harness. Reinstall the valve cover (use a new valve cover gasket/O-rings to prevent oil leaks). Reconnect the high-pressure fuel lines.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3211 fault code from the ECU memory. (Note: If a new injector was installed, the new injector's trim codes may need to be programmed into the ECU).

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Fuel Injector

    504255185

Manufacturer: Bosch (Part # 0445120157 or 0986435564). Direct replacement for 8.7L Diesel I6 engines. Programming/coding may be required after installation.

  • Engine Injector Wiring Harness

    23526101

Varies heavily by specific engine serial and frame number.

  • Valve Cover Gasket / Injector O-Rings

Required for reassembly after removing the rocker/injector cover to access the harness.
