ENG 3216

New Holland ENG 3216 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Bosch EDC7 or EDC17: Bank1 Warning - Open Load

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an 'open load' (an open electrical circuit or broken connection) in the wiring or solenoid coils for the fuel injectors on 'Bank 1'. This prevents the affected injectors from firing and causes a severe engine misfire or shutdown.

Applies to these machines

  • T5 series tractors
  • T8 series tractors
  • T9 series tractors
  • CR series combines
  • CX series combines
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • E135B excavators
  • wheel loaders

Check the cause

  1. Check for Sub-Codes: Use the electronic service tool (or the machine's diagnostic display) to check for accompanying cylinder-specific open load codes (e.g., 3188 for Cyl 1, 3192 for Cyl 2, 3196 for Cyl 3). This will pinpoint exactly which injector circuit is broken.

  2. External Harness Inspection: Inspect the main engine wiring harness between the Bosch EDC module and the valve cover pass-through connector. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose/corroded connector pins.

  3. Pin-Out Continuity Test: Disconnect the harness at the ECU and at the injectors. Use a multimeter to check for continuity on the Bank 1 injector wires. Also, check for a short-to-ground.

  4. Injector Coil Resistance Test: If the external wiring is intact, remove the valve cover and test the resistance (Ohms) of the internal injector harness and the individual Bank 1 injector solenoid coils. An injector with infinite resistance has an internally open coil and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Ensure the high-pressure fuel system has depressurized.

  2. Access the Harness

Locate the EDC module and trace the injector wiring harness to the cylinder head.

  3. Repair/Replace External Wiring

If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire in the external harness, repair the wire using OEM-approved splicing methods or replace the external engine harness section.

  4. Access Internal Components

If the open load is under the valve cover, remove the valve cover bolts and lift the cover off to access the fuel injectors and the internal pigtail harness.

  5. Replace Faulty Component - Internal Harness

If the internal harness is brittle or broken, disconnect it from the injectors and the pass-through connector, and install a new internal harness.

  6. Replace Faulty Component - Injector

If an injector coil tested open, remove the high-pressure fuel line for that cylinder, remove the injector hold-down clamp, and extract the faulty injector. Install a new injector with new copper sealing washers and O-rings.

  7. Reassembly

Reinstall the valve cover using a new valve cover gasket. Reconnect all high-pressure fuel lines (torque to OEM spec) and electrical connectors.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery. Use the diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3216 fault code. Prime the fuel system, start the engine, and verify that the misfire is gone and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Fuel Injector (Bosch CRIN series)

Replace only if the solenoid coil tests open.

  • Injector Wiring Harness (Internal/External)

Specific to the engine family and cylinder count.

  • Valve Cover Gasket

Required if the valve cover is removed to access the injectors or internal harness.

  • Injector Sealing Washers / O-Rings

Must be replaced if a fuel injector is removed.
