New Holland ENG 3218 – Engine ECU: TWV2 Output Open Load Injector Coil Open
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an open circuit or short circuit in the fuel injector solenoid circuit for Bank 2 (specifically the Two-Way Valve / TWV2 or TWV4). The electrical connection to the fuel injector is broken (open load) or shorted, preventing the injector coil from energizing, leading to a dead cylinder, engine misfires, rough idling, and a loss of power.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the fuel injectors for chafed wires, melted insulation, or breaks.
Disconnect the electrical plug at the affected injector (Injector 2 or 4) and check for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two pins of the injector coil. If the reading is infinite (OL) or significantly out of the OEM specification range, the injector coil is internally open.
Check for continuity between the injector connector and the corresponding pin on the Engine ECU harness. If there is no continuity, the wiring harness needs to be repaired or replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts. Clean the area around the fuel rail and injectors thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
Access
Remove any engine covers, intake piping, or brackets obstructing access to the fuel injectors.
Disconnection
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty injector.
Fuel Line Removal
Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the fuel rail to the injector. Cap the rail and line fittings immediately to prevent contamination.
Injector Removal
Remove the injector hold-down clamp/bolt. Carefully pull the injector straight up and out of the cylinder head bore.
Cleaning
Clean the injector bore inside the cylinder head, ensuring the old copper sealing washer is removed and not stuck at the bottom.
Installation
Install the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (leave slightly loose if bleeding is required, though many common rail systems self-bleed) and torque to spec.
Final Steps
Reconnect the electrical plug, reassemble the engine covers, and reconnect the battery.
Code Clearing
Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3218 fault code from the Engine ECU and run the machine to verify the misfire is resolved.
