New Holland ENG 3219 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Bank2 - Injection Cable Short circuit Low Side to Ground

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has detected that the low side (the ground return or control side) of the fuel injector wiring circuit for the Bank 2 injectors is shorted directly to ground. This bypasses the ECU's ability to properly control the injector firing sequence for that bank.

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the battery to prevent any accidental damage to the ECU.

  2. Disconnect the injector wiring harness from the Engine ECU and from the Bank 2 fuel injectors.

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness for Bank 2. Look closely for chafed insulation, melted wires, or areas where the harness may be pinched against the engine block, valve cover, or chassis ground.

  4. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance between the low-side pins of the Bank 2 injector connectors and a known good chassis ground. The reading should be an open circuit (infinite resistance/OL). If continuity is present, the harness is shorted to ground.

  5. Test the Bank 2 fuel injectors themselves for an internal short to their metal casing/ground.

  6. Inspect the ECU connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the low-side circuit to a ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Open wire loom

    If the visual inspection or multimeter test reveals a short in the wiring harness, carefully open the wire loom at the suspected area.

  2. Repair or replace wiring harness

    Repair the shorted wire by cutting out the damaged section and soldering in a new piece of wire, sealing it with dual-wall adhesive heat shrink tubing. If the harness is heavily degraded or oil-soaked, replace the entire injector wiring harness.

  3. Replace fuel injector

    If an injector is found to be internally shorted to ground during testing, remove and replace the faulty fuel injector.

  4. Repair or replace ECU

    If the harness and injectors test perfectly fine, the short may be internal to the Engine ECU's low-side driver. In this case, the ECU will need to be sent out for remanufacturing or replaced entirely.

  5. Reconnect and verify

    Reconnect all harnesses, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool), and run the engine to verify the code does not return.
