ENG 3224

New Holland ENG 3224 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): Bank2 Warning - Open Load

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an open circuit (open load) in the fuel injector wiring harness for 'Bank 2' (cylinders 4, 5, and 6). An open load means electrical current cannot flow to the injector solenoids on this bank, usually due to a broken wire, disconnected plug, or a failed injector solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • T6
  • T7
  • T8.xxx Series
  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation
  • B95B
  • B110B
  • D85B
  • D95B

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the injector wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the Bank 2 injectors for chafed wires, melted insulation, or disconnected plugs.

  2. Perform a harness continuity test by disconnecting the harness at the ECU and at the Bank 2 injectors, using a multimeter to check for continuity on each wire.

  3. Measure the resistance across the terminals of each Bank 2 injector solenoid (cylinders 4, 5, and 6). An infinite reading (OL) indicates an internally failed (open) injector.

  4. Check the valve cover gasket pass-through connector for loose pins, corrosion, or oil intrusion, which commonly causes open circuit faults.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts or ECU damage during the repair.

  2. Access the Harness/Injectors

Remove the engine covers or valve cover as necessary to access the Bank 2 injector wiring harness and the fuel injectors.

  3. Replace the Faulty Component

If the harness failed continuity: Remove the damaged injector wiring harness and route the replacement harness exactly as the original, ensuring it is secured away from high-heat sources (like the exhaust manifold) and vibration points. If an injector failed resistance: Remove the high-pressure fuel line and the injector hold-down clamp. Extract the faulty injector, clean the injector cup, and install the new injector with a new copper sealing washer and O-rings. Torque the hold-down bolt and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

  4. Reassembly

Reconnect all electrical connectors and reinstall the valve cover/engine covers.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic service tool (like CNH EST) to clear the ENG 3224 fault code.

  6. Test Run

Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and verify that the engine runs smoothly without throwing the code again.

Parts you might need

(8)
  • Engine Injector Wiring Harness

Specific to the engine model (e.g., FPT 4.5L vs 6.7L). Must match the exact engine serial number.
