ENG 3228

New Holland ENG 3228 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injection Processor (CY33X) Error - Unlocked / Initialization Failure

Issue description

The CY33X microchip/processor located internally on the engine control board failed to initialize properly upon startup or became 'unlocked' (lost its synchronized state or memory parameters) during operation, indicating an internal hardware or software communication failure.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T8 Series
  • T9 Series
  • CR Series
  • CR9090
  • CX Series
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • B95C
  • B110B
  • W190B

Check the cause

  1. Perform a battery and voltage drop test to ensure the battery is fully charged and system voltage does not drop excessively during engine cranking.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the Engine ECU for loose, corroded, or damaged pins on the main power supply and ground circuits.

  3. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or DTC eraser to clear the code, cycle the key, and attempt to start the engine to check if the code is active or a one-time glitch.

  4. Verify internal ECU failure by confirming power and ground are within specification and the code immediately returns.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the machine's battery before performing any electrical repairs.

  2. Remove ECU

Remove the Engine ECU from its mounting bracket.

  3. Repair or clone ECU

Option A (Repair/Clone): Send the faulty ECU to a specialized heavy-duty electronics repair facility to repair the internal board or clone your original software onto a donor unit.

  4. Replace ECU

Option B (Replace): Install a new or remanufactured Engine ECU.

  5. Program new ECU

If a new 'blank' ECU is installed, a dealer technician must use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to program/flash the module with the correct software for your specific machine and engine configuration.
