New Holland ENG 3231 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC): Injection Processor Error - Internal Reset / Clock Loss / Voltage Too Low

This code indicates a critical internal failure or power disruption within the engine controller's injection processor. The processor has experienced an unexpected internal reset, lost its clock synchronization, or detected that its internal operating voltage dropped below the minimum threshold required to function.

   Cycle power by turning the machine off and restarting it to check if the fault was a transient electrical disturbance

   Verify system voltage by checking the battery voltage and alternator charging system, as low voltage can starve the ECM of power

   Inspect main chassis grounds and specific grounding circuits for the ECM to rule out voltage drops

   Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the ECM for water ingress, corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals

   Disconnect the negative battery cable

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing.

   Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors

   Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the Engine Control Module (ECM).

   Unbolt the faulty ECM

   Unbolt the faulty ECM from its mounting bracket on the engine block or firewall.

   Install the replacement ECM and secure the mounting bolts.

   Reconnect the wiring harness connectors

   Reconnect the wiring harness connectors, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated.

   Program the new ECM

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and flash the ECM with the correct dataset/software variant for your specific machine's VIN/serial number. Alternatively, the original ECM data must be cloned to the new unit by a specialized repair facility.

   Start the engine and verify

   Start the engine and verify that fault code ENG 3231 has been eliminated.
