ENG 3235

New Holland ENG 3235 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector: Number of Injections Limited by Charge Balance

Issue description

The number of fuel injections requested by the engine exceeds the maximum allowed injections for the current battery voltage and engine speed. The system actively limits the injection events to maintain the electrical charge balance of the machine, causing the engine to not start or severely limiting engine performance.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and overall battery health, as this fault is directly tied to charge balance

  2. Visually inspect harnesses and connectors leading to the ECU for damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires

  3. Flex the harnesses to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts

  4. Verify that the voltage supply and ground paths to the ECU are present and secure, tracing for any voltage drops

Repair steps

  1. Test and Replace Battery

Test the battery voltage. If the voltage is low or the battery fails a load test, replace the battery.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the visual inspection reveals damaged wiring, grounds, or connectors, repair the damage discovered.

  3. Clear and Retest

Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) using a diagnostic tool (like the FES tool) and cycle the ignition (OFF and ON) to see if the fault returns.

  4. Re-flash ECU Software

If the battery voltage is good and the wiring is intact but the fault persists, re-flash the ECU software.

  5. Replace the ECU

If re-flashing the software does not correct the fault, the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has failed internally and must be replaced.
