ENG 3242

New Holland ENG 3242 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control): EDC - ECM (Locked) Recovery Occurred

Issue description

This code indicates an internal software or processor error within the engine controller. The ECM's internal 'watchdog' monitor detected a processing anomaly, software crash, or memory visibility issue, and forced a 'locked recovery' (a safe-state reset) to prevent erratic or unsafe engine operation.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 series
  • T7 series
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T8 series
  • B90B
  • B100B
  • B110B
  • B115B
  • L220
  • Magnum series (235-340)
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and alternator charging output for voltage spikes, severe drops during cranking, or overcharging

  2. Inspect the main wiring harness connecting to the ECM for water intrusion, corroded pins, or chafed wires

  3. Check engine block and chassis grounds for poor connections

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the current software version on the ECM

Repair steps

  1. Test the Electrical System

Load-test the batteries and verify the alternator is outputting a stable voltage (typically ~14V for a 12V system). Clean and tighten the battery terminals.

  2. Clean ECM Connections

Disconnect the multi-pin connectors at the Engine ECM. Spray with electrical contact cleaner, ensure no pins are bent or pushed back, and securely reconnect them. Clean the main ground strap attached to the engine block.

  3. Clear and Retest

Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool and run the machine. If the code does not return, the issue was likely a transient voltage drop or loose connection.

  4. Reflash the ECM

If the code returns, use the CNH EST to flash the ECM with the latest software calibration/dataset.

  5. Replace the ECM

If the wiring is flawless, the voltage is stable, and the software update fails or does not resolve the 3242 code, the ECM has suffered an unrecoverable internal hardware/processor failure and must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Unit

Varies strictly by machine model and FPT Engine Serial Number. Must be programmed/flashed by a dealer using the CNH EST tool to write the specific dataset (variant configuration) and injector trim codes for the exact machine.
