New Holland ENG 3243 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM (Suppressed) - Recovery Occurred
Issue description
This is an internal controller fault. It indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) experienced an internal software anomaly, watchdog timeout, or hardware voltage fluctuation that forced the processor to reset or 'recover' while the machine was operating. The recovery was 'suppressed,' meaning the system managed to reboot or correct the error transparently without causing a full, visible engine shutdown to the operator, though the event was logged in the system memory.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- T8.320
- T8.350
- T8.380
- T8.410
- T8.435
- T9 Series
- T7.175
- T7.315
- T7.340
Check the cause
Check battery voltage and load-test the batteries for voltage drops during high-load events or voltage spikes from a faulty alternator.
Inspect the main chassis grounds and the specific power/ground pins at the Engine ECU harness connector, ensuring all connections are clean and tight.
Look for related initialization or voltage codes (e.g., 3245, 3247, 3248) that might pinpoint the root cause.
Connect the CNH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to check if the Engine ECU has the latest software calibration.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool and pull the full log of active and stored fault codes.
Inspect grounds and battery terminals
Inspect the battery terminals, cab grounds, and engine block grounds. Clean any corrosion and ensure they are torqued to spec.
Inspect ECU harness connectors
Disconnect the Engine ECU harness connectors and inspect for pushed pins, moisture, or chafing on the wires.
Clear codes and test-run
Clear the fault codes and test-run the machine under load to see if the code returns.
Update ECU software
If the code returns and no wiring/voltage issues are found, use the EST tool to flash the Engine ECU with the latest software update.
Replace or rebuild Engine ECU
If the code persists after a software update—especially if accompanied by drivability issues or internal EEPROM/SPI communication errors (e.g., codes 3238, 3239, 3240)—the Engine ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced or sent to a specialized rebuilder.
