ENG 3246

New Holland ENG 3246 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): Shutoff Paths During Initialization - Watchdog

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit's (ECU) internal watchdog timer detected a failure or an implausible condition within its redundant safety shutoff circuits while the module was booting up (initializing). This is generally an internal hardware or software processing failure within the module itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T8 Series (T8.380, T8.410)
  • CR9040
  • CR9060
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • B110B
  • B115
  • B95B
  • D150B
  • F104B
  • Magnum 235-340
  • 580 Super N
  • 590SN
  • 695ST

Check the cause

  1. Check for electronic disturbances by verifying the ECU is receiving clean, stable power. Check battery voltage, battery terminals, and the main ECU ground connections.

  2. Perform a hard reset by turning off the machine and the master battery disconnect switch for several minutes, then turn it back on to force the ECU to completely power down and re-initialize.

  3. Check for software updates, as watchdog errors can occasionally be resolved by flashing the ECU with the latest software dataset using an authorized dealer tool.

Repair steps

  1. Turn ignition ON

Turn the ignition key to the ON position to allow the ECU to initialize.

  2. Monitor display

Monitor the display. If the 3246 fault code remains active after the initialization sequence completes, the internal watchdog circuit is permanently defective.

  3. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  4. Inspect ECU connectors

Disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the Engine ECU. Inspect the pins for water intrusion or corrosion (clean if necessary, though unlikely to fix an internal watchdog failure).

  5. Remove ECU

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to the engine block/mounting bracket.

  6. Replace ECU

Install a new Engine Control Unit.

  7. Program ECU

A new ECU will arrive blank or with a base file. It must be programmed by a dealer with the correct dataset/variant for your specific machine PIN/serial number, otherwise, it will throw Dataset Variant codes.
