ENG 3248

New Holland ENG 3248 – Engine Controller: Shutoff Paths During Initialization - Supply Voltage Too Low

Issue description

When the machine is keyed on, the engine controller runs a series of internal self-checks and initialization procedures. This code indicates that during this startup phase, the controller detected that the electrical supply voltage provided to its internal shutoff paths (safety circuits) was below the minimum required threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • T7
  • T8.xxx Series
  • T9 Series
  • B110B
  • LB110
  • B115
  • LB115
  • CR9090
  • CX8080 Elevation
  • CX8090 Elevation
  • Magnum 235 - 340 (Series 4)
  • 580N
  • 580SN
  • 590SN
  • 590
  • 695 B

Check the cause

  1. Measure the battery voltage at rest and during cranking to ensure it does not drop below the ECM's threshold during initialization

  2. Test the voltage at the main power supply pins on the ECM harness connector to ensure it matches battery voltage without significant drop

  3. Check all ECM ground connections (both at the chassis and the battery negative) for high resistance

  4. Inspect the main ECM power relay and associated fuses in the fuse box for signs of burning, corrosion, or intermittent failure

  5. Inspect the wiring harness between the battery/fuse box and the ECM for chafing, breaks, or corroded connectors

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery negative terminal before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Resolve Battery Issues

If the battery failed the load test or voltage check, replace it.

  3. Clean Connections

Clean all battery terminals, chassis grounds, and ECM ground points with a wire brush to ensure a solid, low-resistance connection.

  4. Replace Faulty Relays/Fuses

Replace any blown fuses or faulty main power relays supplying the ECM.

  5. Repair Wiring

Repair any damaged sections of the wiring harness or replace corroded connector pins.

  6. Re-test

Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position to allow the ECM to initialize.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool and verify if code ENG 3248 returns.

  8. ECM Replacement

If the power supply and grounds are verified to be perfect under load, but the code persists, the ECM has suffered an internal hardware failure in its shutoff path circuitry. The ECM must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC)

Generic part name. (e.g., Bosch EDC7 or EDC17 depending on the engine tier). Consult the specific machine's parts catalog for the exact OEM number.

  • Main Power Relay

Generic 12V automotive-style relay (part number varies by fuse box configuration).

  • Battery

Standard heavy-duty equipment battery (e.g., Group 31, depending on the machine).
