New Holland ENG 3257 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Turbine Speed and Air Pressure Too High

Issue description

The engine's turbocharger is over-speeding and producing boost pressure (intake air pressure) that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold for the current engine load and speed.

Check the cause

  1. Check the boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor) data stream. Look for erratic readings, signal plausibility errors, or a 'Signal Above Range Max' condition.

  2. Inspect the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) actuator. A mechanically stuck VGT linkage or a failing electronic actuator will cause the turbo vanes to stick in a high-boost position, leading to over-speeding.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Engine ECU to the boost pressure sensor and the VGT actuator for chafing, short circuits to battery/ground, or open loads.

Repair steps

  1. Retrieve Sub-Codes

    Connect the CNH EASy diagnostic tool to retrieve the specific FPT engine DTC (e.g., 19B) and check for accompanying electrical faults.

  2. Inspect and Clean

    Remove the boost pressure sensor located on the intake manifold. Inspect it for heavy soot or carbon buildup, which can cause false high-pressure readings. Clean or replace as necessary.

  3. Test the VGT Actuator

    Command the VGT actuator through its full sweep using the diagnostic tool. If the actuator binds, fails to move, or fails the sweep test, the actuator (or the entire turbocharger assembly, depending on the turbo model) must be replaced.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

    Install the new boost pressure sensor or VGT turbocharger assembly.

  5. Clear and Relearn

    Clear the fault codes from the EDC. If a new VGT actuator or turbocharger was installed, perform the VGT actuator calibration/relearn procedure via the EASy tool.

  6. Test Run

    Run the machine under load to verify that turbine speed and air pressure remain within specified limits and the code does not return.
