New Holland ENG 3258 – ENGINE: Starter Relay: Output Open Load / Short to Battery
Issue description
The engine controller has detected an electrical anomaly in the starter relay circuit. The high-pressure side power stage output is either experiencing an open circuit (disconnected/broken wire) or is shorted to a battery voltage source.

Check the cause
Locate the starter relay and check for signs of internal shorting, melting, or a burnt smell
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the starter relay for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or rubbing against the frame
Disconnect the relay and check the socket terminals for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or debris
With the relay removed and the key off, test the ECU output wire at the relay socket for voltage (12V present indicates a short to battery in the harness)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental cranking or electrical spikes.
Access the Relay
Open the fuse/relay panel or access the starter relay block.
Test/Replace the Relay
Pull the starter relay. If diagnostic checks point to an internal short inside the relay (a very common cause for this code), discard the old relay and plug a new OEM replacement directly into the existing relay block.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the relay tests fine but a short to battery was found in the harness during diagnostics, trace the wire back to the ECU. Repair any damaged sections of the wire using heat-shrink connectors and re-loom the harness.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (CNH EST) to clear the inactive ENG 3258 fault code from the Engine ECU.
Verify Repair
Turn the key to the START position to ensure the starter engages properly and the code does not return.
