New Holland ENG 3261 – Engine Controller: Starter Relay: Low Side Power - Short Circuit to Battery of Excess Temperature

The Engine Controller (ECU) has detected a fault on the low-side driver circuit that controls the starter relay. Specifically, the circuit is either shorted directly to battery voltage or the driver has exceeded its safe operating temperature limit due to excessive current draw.

   Inspect the starter relay in the main fuse/relay box for signs of melting, scorching, or heat damage.

   Test the relay socket with a multimeter to verify the low-side control circuit is not shorted to a 12V power source.

   Trace and inspect the wiring harness from the starter relay block back to the Engine Controller for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses.

   Ensure the battery is fully charged and that all chassis and engine grounds are clean and tight.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts or starter engagement during the repair.

   Locate the Relay

   Access the main electrical fuse/relay panel. On skid steers, this is typically located in the cab or engine compartment; on tractors, it may be under the dash cowling.

   Remove the Faulty Relay

   Pull the affected starter relay from its socket. If the relay is melted into the socket, carefully extract it without damaging the surrounding terminal pins.

   Repair Wiring (If Necessary)

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a short to battery voltage in the wiring harness between the ECU and the relay panel, repair the damaged section of the wire and wrap it in protective loom.

   Install the New Relay

   Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the pins of the new starter relay (to prevent moisture and corrosion) and press it firmly into the socket.

   Test the System

   Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic service tool (or cycle the key if the system self-clears inactive codes). Attempt to start the engine to verify the repair.
