ENG 3262

New Holland ENG 3262 – ENGINE: Starter Relay: Low Side Power - Short Circuit to Ground

Issue description

The engine control unit has detected a short to ground condition on the low side control circuit that operates the starter relay.

Applies to these machines

  • Machines equipped with F5C and F5H (DOC) engines
  • Skid Steer Loaders (L220, SR175)
  • Compact Wheel Loaders (W50C, W60C, W70C, W80C)

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the ECM, the starter, and the starter relay connections to ensure all connections are secure, tight, and free of corrosion, abrasion, or damage.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the ECM to the starter and the starter relay. Verify that the harness is free of damage, corrosion, abrasion, and incorrect attachment.

  3. Check the ECU output stage (Low Side Driver) for an open or short circuit to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery power

Disconnect battery power before servicing the electrical system.

  2. Repair or replace wiring

Based on the visual and multimeter inspection of the wiring harness, repair or replace any damaged wires or connectors between the Engine Controller and the starter relay.

  3. Replace starter relay

If the wiring and connectors are intact but the short to ground remains present when the relay is engaged, replace the starter relay.

  4. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser.

  5. Reload dataset or replace controller

If the fault persists after verifying the harness and replacing the relay, official service instructions state to 'Reload Engine Dataset Or Replace Engine Controller'.
