ENG 3263

New Holland ENG 3263 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM Bus Off on CAN C

Issue description

Indicates an internal condition where the control module has dropped off or suspended communication on the CAN C network. This is triggered by electronic disturbances, an incorrect application of injection parameters, a requested torque increase via a diagnostic tester, or a defective internal ECU.

Applies to these machines

  • T8.xxx Series
  • B110
  • B110B
  • LB110
  • B115
  • LB115
  • CR Series
  • CR9090
  • CX Series
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • Magnum 235–340 (Series 4)
  • Case 580 Super N
  • Case 590 Super N
  • Case 695 Super N

Check the cause

  1. Check for electronic disturbances such as high battery voltage, defective wiring, or poor grounds that could cause electrical noise on the CAN C bus

  2. Verify the injection relevant application to ensure the correct software and calibration files are flashed to the ECM

  3. Clear the fault code and retest, as a simple reset may resolve the issue if triggered by a diagnostic tester requesting a torque increase

Repair steps

  1. Inspect CAN C Wiring

Locate the ECM and disconnect the main harnesses. Inspect the CAN C bus pins and connectors for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture.

  2. Test Voltage and Grounds

Measure the voltage supply to the ECM and test the main ground connections. Excessive voltage or a floating ground can cause the ECM to shut down its CAN transceiver to protect itself.

  3. Re-flash the ECM

If the wiring is intact, use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the ECM's software. Re-flash or update the ECM with the correct injection application parameters.

  4. Replace the ECM

If the failure persists after reinstallation and all wiring/voltage checks pass, the internal CAN transceiver in the ECU is defective. The ECM must be replaced and programmed to the machine.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) Unit

Must be ordered using the machine's specific Engine Serial Number (ESN) and PIN. Requires dealer programming (CNH EST) to flash the correct dataset/variant for the immobilizer and fuel injection system to function.
