New Holland ENG 3266 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU) / EDC: Engine Speed Sensor: Redundant Engine Speed in Overrun Monitoring - Speed Signal Not Plausible

The Engine Control Unit detects a mismatch between the primary engine speed signal and the redundant speed signal. The absolute value of the deviation between the primary engine speed and the redundant segment exceeds 320 RPM for more than 800 milliseconds, while the engine is operating above 1000 RPM.

   Verify operator settings to ensure incorrect engine speed is not set (reduce throttle if RPM is above 1300 during monitored overrun)

   Use the machine's diagnostic menu (e.g., H9 or HE menu) to verify if engine speed is actively being detected

   Inspect the CAN bus for a broken communication line between the engine controller and the instrument cluster

   Check the power supply to ensure the instrument cluster is receiving proper power

   Inspect the wiring harness for an open circuit between the engine speed sensor and the instrument panel/ECU

   Clear and Retest

   Clear the fault code and operate the machine. Reduce the throttle to see if the overspeed/overrun condition clears on its own.

   Inspect the Sensor

   Locate the engine speed sensor (crankshaft or camshaft position sensor). Inspect the sensor tip for debris and check the electrical connector for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

   Test the Harness

   Using a multimeter, test the wiring harness between the speed sensor and the Engine ECU for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery voltage. Repair any damaged wiring.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the speed signal remains erratic, missing, or implausible, replace the Engine Speed Sensor.

   Software Flash

   If replacing the sensor does not resolve the issue, reload the Engine Dataset (reflash the ECU software).

   Replace the ECU

   If the fault persists after a software reflash and sensor replacement, the Engine Controller (ECU) has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
