New Holland ENG 3266 – Engine Control Module (ECM / EDC): Speed sensor: Sensor 1 - Wrong Signal (deviation 20 RPM)
Issue description
The Engine Control Module is detecting an implausible engine speed signal. Specifically, the primary engine speed sensor is reporting a rotational speed that deviates by 20 RPM from the redundant/secondary speed sensor (or expected overrun monitoring values). This indicates a loss of synchronization, a failing sensor, or signal interference.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the engine speed sensor (Sensor A/1 and Sensor B/2) for chafing, corrosion, or backed-out pins.
Verify the sensor supply voltage and check the sensor's internal resistance using a multimeter to ensure it is not shorted to ground or open.
Remove the sensor and inspect the tip for metallic debris. Inspect the tone ring (crankshaft/camshaft signal wheel) through the sensor bore for damaged teeth or misalignment.
Check the secondary camshaft/crankshaft speed sensor to ensure it isn't the one providing the faulty baseline.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the faulty engine speed sensor (crankshaft or camshaft position) on the engine block. You may need to unbolt the main connector bracket or cut wire ties to access the sensor harness.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the speed sensor.
Removal
Remove the single retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the sensor straight out of its bore.
Clean
Wipe the mounting surface and bore clean, ensuring no dirt falls into the engine.
Installation
Insert the new speed sensor.
Torque
Thread the retaining bolt and torque it to 5 - 15 N·m (4 - 11 lb ft) as specified in the F5C/F5H engine service manuals.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector, secure any wire ties or brackets that were removed, and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3266 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the RPM reads steadily without throwing the code.
